Asleep/Awake

Lia's undergraduate thesis project, Asleep/Awake, is a speculative investigation into the digitization and bastardization of human memory. Immersing the audience into a recreated childhood bedroom using spatial design, visual programming, video art, and collage on quilted fabric, the art installation explores the process memories undergo when moving from an intimately familiar, intangibly dream-like space into a digital one. As well as representing this uncanny transformation, the project encourages the audience to question our interactions with and increased social dependance on AI tools, specifically their effects on our perceptions of the past. What would your childhood bedroom look like if it wasn't "real"? How do you know it ever was "real"? What is identity in a world where digital manipulation and fabrication has surpassed the realm of truth?
